Conaway Edmund; Francis McCray, Henry Prickett Deed, West Virginia


Another Edmund M. Conaway deed, this time made jointly with Francis McCray and naming both Edmund’s wife Lydia and Francis’ wife Matilda and Henry Prickett. All these names are prominent in the genealogy and history of West Virginia. Note the spelling is Conway in this deed. Lydia is Lydia S. Clelland, daughter of Patrick Clelland & Priscilla Nichols.

This deed made this 1st day of June 1859 between Edmund M. Conaway and Lydia S. his wife Francis M. McCrary and Matilda his wife parties of the first part and Henry Prickett party of the second part and all of the County of Marion & State of Virginia. Witnesseth that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant and convey with general warranty unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever all of a certain lot or parcel of land situate in the town of Barracksville Marion County & State of Virginia being the same lands conveyed by James M. Barrick & wife to the said F. M. McCray Nov. 20th 1852. and Elias Dudley & wife to the said Edmund M. Conway Aprile 30th 1853 also another lot in said town conveyed by the said James M. Barrick & wife to the said F. M. McCray in the year 1850 being three lots in all and bounded as follows (to wit)

Beginning at a stake N 51-1/2° W 14 poles to a stake in Robinson line thence with an line thereof N 26° E 15 poles to a Hickory stump thence S 57° E 10 poles to a line Stump on a cleft of Rocks corner to Conway thence with two lines thereof S 25° W 52 poles to a stake near a locust tree thence S 51-1/2° E 9-6/10 poles to a stake in the west edge of the street thence with said street S 26-3/4° W 3-3/10 poles to the beginning containing one acre 1 rood and 30 perch and they the said parties of the first part do covenant to and with the said party of the second part that they have good right and title to the above described premises and that they will defend the same with its appurtenances unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever. Witness the following signatures & seals this the day and year first above written.

William MacDonnell, the deputy for Boaz F. Hamilton, Clerk of the County Court, certified he interviewd Francis and Matilda, and affirmed the deed. Boaz Hamilton interviewed and certified Edmund and Lydia. A note on the side of the page states “Delivered to H. Prickett”
